Free trials without the surprise charge

A free trial is a paid subscription with a start date you agreed to in advance. A few habits keep it from turning into one you forgot about.

Most free trials do not end. They convert. The moment you start one, a paid subscription is already scheduled, and unless you do something about it, it begins the day the trial runs out.

That is less a trick than simply how trials are built. But it means the work of not paying falls on you, on a date that is easy to forget.

Before you tap Start

A few seconds here save most of the trouble later:

  • What does it turn into? Check the price and the billing cycle it converts to. Some trials roll straight into a yearly plan, charged in full on the first day.
  • When exactly does it end? Note the date, not “in a week or so”.
  • Where do you cancel it? If you subscribe through the App Store, you manage it from your iPhone’s Settings. If you sign up on a company’s own website, you usually cancel there too.

Set the reminder on day one

The best time to plan the end of a trial is the moment it starts, while the date is in front of you. Meaning to remember later is how trials turn into charges.

Leave yourself a margin, too. For subscriptions bought through the App Store, automatic renewal has to be turned off at least 24 hours before the current period ends, so a reminder on the last day can already be too late. A reminder two or three days ahead leaves room to try the thing properly and still decide in time.

How to cancel on iPhone

For a subscription billed through Apple:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Choose the subscription, then tap Cancel Subscription. During a trial, the button may read Cancel Free Trial instead.

If the subscription is not in that list, someone other than Apple is billing you for it. Look for the receipt email from when you signed up, and cancel through that company’s website or app.

Depending on the app, cancelling a trial early can end it straight away rather than on its last day. If you want the whole trial, that is one more reason to set a reminder for near the end instead of cancelling on day one.

Keeping track of trials in Blips

Blips treats a free trial as what it is: a subscription with a date attached. Trials get a reminder of their own before they convert to paid, and they sit in the Calendar and Timeline alongside everything else that is coming up. With Blips Pro, you can choose exactly when each reminder arrives.

You can also just ask. Siri can tell you which of your free trials are about to end, and the same question works as an action in the Shortcuts app.

Blips does not cancel anything for you. It keeps the dates in front of you, so the decision stays yours.
